Stormers have been ‘working for this all season’, says Paul de Villiers

Rising Stormers loose forward talent Paul de Villiers is gearing up for the biggest match of his fledgling career, saying a huge United Rugby Championship (URC) semifinal encounter against defending champions Leinster in Dublin is exactly what the team has been working towards. palladian.co.za

Since finishing second on the URC log in the first season of the competition, and going on to win, and third on the log in URC two, when they finished as runners-up, the Stormers have finished fifth on the log the past two seasons and been dumped out in the quarter-finals.

This season they finally finished in the top four again, with their third-place finish, earneding them a home quarter-final against Cardiff which they duly won in Cape Town last weekend.

Now, however, they travel to Ireland to take on Irish giants Leinster, with the Stormers gunning for a first ever away play-off win to get them to a third final in five seasons.

“For players and for the team, that’s what we’ve been working for all season. To be here and to be playing in a semifinal. And then, of course, to play against Leinster, which is a proper team, makes it an even bigger occasion,” De Villiers said.

“We understand we’re playing a very strong outfit. They are a team packed with internationals. It’s going to be a massive challenge.”

Powerful pack

Where the Stormers will look to get the upper hand will be at the step piece, with their forward pack one of the most destructive at scrum time, while their lineouts and mauls are very dangerous weapons, and De Villiers said he enjoyed playing behind a dominant pack.

“Playing in a good team and behind a good pack makes it so much easier for the individual to fulfil his role and play his best rugby. We’ve got an awesome pack and an awesome team, but there’s still stuff we can do better,” said De Villiers.

This has been a breakout season for the 23-year-old De Villiers, who has become a regular starter at No 6 for the Stormers, especially when Deon Fourie has been out injured, while he has also worked incredibly well in tandem with the Bok veteran when he has been fit.

A possible Springbok call-up is definitely on the cards for De Villiers after being invited to two alignment camps so far this year, and although that is a major goal for him, he says all of his focus is currently on the URC campaign.

“For every player in the Stormers at the moment, the focus is only on Saturday. After that we’ll see what happens, but for now it’s only about what we can do to make the team better.”

En dépit de plusieurs occasions franches, ils se sont heurtés à un gardien tanzanien inspiré, qui a longtemps préservé l’avantage des siens.

Au retour des vestiaires, le Sénégal a fini par remettre les pendules à l’heure en égalisant à la 64e minutes. Malgré les tentatives des deux équipes, aucun autre but n’a été inscrit jusqu’au coup de sifflet final.

Il a donc fallu recourir à la séance des tirs au but pour départager les deux finalistes. Plus réalistes dans cet exercice, les Lionceaux se sont imposés 4 tirs au but à 2 et ont ainsi remporté cette finale de la CAN U17.

Ce mardi 2 juin 2026, les Lionceaux de la Teranga ajoutent une nouvelle ligne à leur palmarès continental. Grâce à ce succès face à la Tanzanie, le Sénégal décroche son deuxième titre africain dans la catégorie U17.

Les signaux sont au rouge pour le Ghana. Engagé dans le groupe L aux côtés du Panama, de l’Angleterre et de la Croatie, le Ghana peine à rassurer avant la Coupe du monde.

Accroché 1-1 par le Pays de Galles ce mardi après avoir mené, les Black Stars restent sur six matchs amicaux sans victoire. Un bilan inquiétant alors que le changement d’Otto Addo pour Carlos Queiroz n’a, pour le moment, rien changé.

Un nul frustrant face au Pays de Galles

Pour sa première sortie amicale, le Ghana a laissé filer la victoire dans les ultimes minutes à Cardiff. Les Black Stars avaient pourtant ouvert le score et semblaient en mesure de tenir jusqu’au bout. Mais ils ont concédé l’égalisation à la 90+6 (1-1), laissant un goût amer. Dans un groupe L où chaque point comptera face au Panama, à l’Angleterre et à la Croatie, ce manque de maîtrise dans le money time inquiète déjà.

Six matchs sans victoire, un bilan préoccupant

Ce match nul ne masque pas la réalité : le Ghana reste sur six matchs amicaux sans victoire. Défait 2-0 par le Mexique, 2-1 contre l’Allemagne, 5-1 face à l’Autriche, puis battu également par la Corée du Sud et le Japon, la dynamique est clairement négative. Le changement de sélectionneur n’a pas encore permis d’inverser la tendance.

Un groupe L relevé avant le Mondial

Si le Ghana doute, ses adversaires ne sont pas totalement rassurés non plus. Le Panama a lourdement chuté face au Brésil (6-2), et la Croatie s’est inclinée contre la Belgique (0-1). L’Angleterre, elle, reste une référence du groupe. Le Ghana devra rapidement retrouver de la confiance et des certitudes avant son entrée en lice prévue le 11 juin.
